The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, says the minister conveyed his decision in a letter to President Bola Tinubu dated December 1, citing health reasons.
Mr Onanuga says President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Alhaji Badaru for his service to the nation.
He adds that the President is expected to notify the Senate of a new nominee for the position later in the week.
Alhaji Badaru Abubakar, aged 63, served as Governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a time President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details expected soon.
